Podcast Ep. 16 – Format Wars and Creepy Clowns

In the late 1970s and early 1980s there was a war raging. It had nothing to do with the Russians, but did affect our culture for decades to come. It was The Format Wars between two competing media technologies: VHS vs. Betamax.

We dig into what gave VHS the competitive edge in the format wars and what it could mean to the brewing fight between Apple, Google and Amazon.

And then we talk to friend and colleague Katherine Gray about the creepy clown phenomenon. She and I (and others with kids in Portland Public Schools” received an odd email from the district regarding clowns. Somehow, this has become a thing and Tom chats with Katherine to figure out why.
