Right on cue following our discussion of the format wars on the podcast, Amazon launches their own streaming music service. A brief report on The Daily Beast says Amazon Music Unlimited will run $3.99 per month for customers who have the Amazon Echo speaker, $7.99 for Amazon Prime subscribers who want to use a different device, and $9.99 for non-subscribers to Prime.
See what they’re doing there? That’s a huge discount if you have the Amazon Echo. And why are they doing that?
“The first phase of growth [in music streaming] was driven almost entirely by smartphones,” Amazon Music Vice President Steve Boom said. “We believe pretty strongly that the next phase of growth in streaming is going to come from the home.”
The calls…they’re coming from…INSIDE THE HOUSE!
